OP

Yeah, but even with Steve fighting for her, he's not exactly going to be able to force people to do let her do things or respect her.

I think, weirdly, that him "dying" and leaving her single gave her far more independence than if they had stayed together.

I'm not blaming Steve for that, it's just that post-war, things would have been very different. And I don't know that Steve would have been able to convincingly argue a case when the situation had changed so much.

As if Peggy has any problem doing things whether people 'let' her or not. Same with Steve. They're both bullheaded as heck and if they want something done, they'll do it no matter what the authorities say. Contrary to the boy scout image that fandom often gives Steve, he doesn't follow the rules.

You wouldn't be able to stop them from doing what's right. If there's anything consistent in BOTH of their narratives, it's that.

And I agree with the anon above that Steve wouldn't fight for the military if he didn't believe in what they were doing. Didn't Winter Soldier make this clear? If they tried to ditch Peggy he'd give them an ultimatum. I don't think he believes he 'owes' them anything.

Keep in mind, though, that Steve served in SHIELD for over two years before he brought them down.

And he had concrete proof by that point that something was up.

I don't think that if the military told him they still needed him, that the threat of the communists was a concern (with their expansion into Eastern Europe for instance) that he would say no. They still have his trust at that point, I'd imagine and I think Steve would be very hesitant to turn them away if they said they needed him. Which I definitely think they would.

And he had concrete proof by that point that something was up.

What concrete proof? Haven't watched the movie in a bit.

He wouldn't do it at the expense of Peggy's dignity though? Or that of any of his friends.

"What concrete proof?"

Well, he really only turns on SHIELD once Nick Fury's been shot and he's been jumped in the elevator. Those were pretty big hints that something was up.

I don't think that the US government asking him to stay on and serve following WWII, with the USSR taking over large swathes of Eastern Europe, would have been an easy proposition for Steve to turn down.

I think Steve would continue to serve AND argue for Peggy's dignity. But I don't think he would stay out of service because they were giving Peggy a hard time. I think he would try to do right by her and fulfill his "obligations" (as the government would frame it) at the same time.

Well yeah he knew something was up, but what could he have done at that point? He had no idea what was up. It's clear he was trying to figure out what it was based on his hiding of the flash drive (to pick up later).

It would have been foolish of him to kick SHIELD to the curb before trying to find out more info from the inside. Turns out though, SHIELD got to him first before vice versa.

"With all do respect sir, if you want Captain America, you've got to allow Agent Peggy Carter as well."

Would they really turn that down? Would they risk losing Captain America because they didn't want his wife/girlfriend working for them as well? They might try to say no at first, but if he pushed it, I just don't think there's any way they wouldn't allow her on board, whether wanted to or not.

"Let" is one thing and they are bullheaded but also women were fired from any kind of government job when they got married, from teaching to military support to spying. Not because of their personal qualities, but because they were married. It wasn't until the late 1960s that this changed. So while I think Peggy certainly would have been doing what was right, she would have had to have been doing it in a very different way - possibly in the UK where some women (such as MI-5 head Stella Rimington) were slowly making their way through the ranks.

Nobody says they would have had to get married. . .
