"Appropriation" is a bullshit idea. Always.

I'm going to be blunt. Anyone who tells you to be ashamed of appropriation, or to mock someone for appropriation, is wrong. Always. No exceptions.

"Appropriation" is a bullshit idea. Always.

Now, if someone is doing something sacrilegious, or something that would be obscene in the culture they're drawing from, probably because they don't know any better, hey, tell them.

But whether it's Gaga wearing a sari, or Western kids cosplaying as anime, or Iggy Azalea doing an American "blaccent" while rapping, NONE OF THAT IS WRONG, and NONE OF IT MAKES YOU RACIST OR BAD. The real racism is the one that says that accents or styles of music or clothes or artforms belong to certain groups of related people and them only.

What are these guys? Cajun roots music? Yeah, enjoy it. They're pretty good.

congrats, this is just as dumb a statement as saying everything is appropriation.

please go back to coachella with your war bonnet.

Kinf of OT but didn't coachella finally ban those? Or is that still in the talks? I know a lot of festivals have started to.

And that would fall under sacrilege, presumably, which I mentioned. Or "stolen honour" if you prefer. The point is that the cross-cultural use isn't what makes it offensive.

But very few "appropriative" uses of clothes or ornamentation are actually offensive in that way—at least they're not to the source culture. But they are offensive to racists who don't want their lily-white culture polluted by the culture of "mud people."

Actually, you know what? I'm not sure I should even care if some white kid in California wears a big old fake turkey feather war bonnet, because the culture where that's a mark of honoured status is not his culture, and meanings of that kind fall apart at the break between cultures.

I totally do understand why someone would care, but I think it's more important to learn that a cultural significance of that kind is not universal than to try to visibly respect every possible cultural tradition by...what? Only staying within your own culture?

Learning about other cultures is about learning that some norms, even of "sacredness" are actually constructed, and local.

If you want to argue for a bunch of new sumptuary laws based on race, I think you're a toad.

You're an ignorant twat.
