I am a huge Star Trek and Star Wars fan. The Star Trek reboot movies bear zero resemblance to Wrath of Khan. They also are not like Star Wars, although you can see the influence if Star Wars in them in a very superficial way that does not have a modicum of he charm of either Star Trek or Star Wars. I don't care what JJ's personal motivation was - I just mean that the direction he was trying to take the Trek reboot in would have worked better for Star Wars.
