The "yes" votes on the spoiler-warnings thread from yesterday are slightly edging out the "no"s, so let's give it a try: spoiler talk is fine and post as many as you want, but warn for them in the first comment then post the actual spoiler stuff collapsed in the second (just like trigger type RL stuff is done currently).

(With the note that if it appears that your intent is to purposely spoil people, that counts as trolling, of course. Posting it in size 200 font as the second comment is not okay just because it's the second comment. Please be reasonable!)

what is the time limit

does this go for just the us release

what about stuff like anime that gets a dub much later than the initial broadcast and many more people pick it up at that time

i mean, you can come up with a rule and enforce it, but not telling us what exactly that entails is pretty shitty

my personal rule is a month

I don't have any personal rules or set length of time. I think that kind of hurts more than helps, actually. For me, it's not really a matter of principle as to whether "other people should have watched whatever by now" or anything like that - I tend to judge by fandoms. A comic came out 3 years ago but fandom is just now discovering and getting into its anime form? Then I'd collapse spoilers because sure, it may have been out for years in obscurity but if I'm aware it's just being picked up, I'd prioritize not upsetting people over my need to avoid posting one more comment.

That's just what I'd do, though. I'm sure lots of other people would argue that it's fair because the comic's been out, and that's okay too.

My personal rule is once it has been released it is no longer a spoiler. I would have not an ounce of doubt that it wouldn't need collapsing then.

Personally, I like the ten year rule. If something has been out for at least ten years, you can spoil it. That should give anyone enough time to read or watch it.

I'd vote 2-3 years at most. But I'd also say that if the thing is an adaption, the time limit is for the original version. So, like, Hobbit stuff is okay because the book has been out for a long time.

You would think that would be okay but there are still people who don't read things like comics and get upset when comic book readers spoiler shows and movies even though the comic has been out for decades.

Not everyone has seen everything, it doesn't matter when it came out. If I have seen the end of a fifty year old movie it is still a spoiler, so be polite and hide that shit.

How is what's a spoiler NOT completely obvious? Major plot points in anything that aren't "common knowledge" (aka they have pop culture notoriety where even non-fans know it) are spoilers, whether a month or ten years old.

I mean you bemoan your oppression and non-freedom to make top GC posts with spoilers, but frankly that says more about you than case.

That is a dumb ass policy.

It's the one that people appeared to want! I mean, minus the sameanon that replied 10 times within 5-6 minutes to yesterday's post once they saw this thread (who I kind of suspect you are, but that's beside the point!).

If you would like to explain your position again, feel free to do so! Maybe some of the people who wanted spoilers to be collapsed will be able to answer you with their reasoning as well.

I disagree. It's a perfectly reasonable policy that requires minimal effort on anyone's part to follow.
