You know, if it were just that one issue, I'd feel less inclined towards anti-Republican no matter what. I'm pro-Choice, but I don't feel nearly as strongly on that issue as I so on other things. What gets me are Republican's anti-poor people, anti-immigrant, anti-minority policies. I think Republican economic policy is inherently classist, I think they cater to rich people and big business (so do Democrats, but less so), I think their views on racism/sexism/homophobia and how they don't believe it exists if it isn't intentional is dangerous, I believe in social programs and the responsibility of the government to help people, and I think that in general their policies only are beneficial for wealthy white men and harmful to everyone else.

I think you're right, but I think it's much easier to see those positions shifting than to imagine the parties changing positions on abortion.

Wow, no. If you think the churches are going to drag the GOP to a left-populist stance, you're wasting your time. I grew up in the religious right, and practically the whole point is to indoctrinate people into voting for movement conservatism, anti-union, etc.

A pro-life but egalitarian voter is likely to be a Democrat. The GOP hate everybody.

I tried to say this once before, but no one understood what the hell I was talking about. Basically, the Democrats have this thing where they "don't punch down." They will always insult people on grounds of being more privileged, e.g. rich people in comparison to poor people. The Republicans do it too, but they always find excuses for how the less privileged people are actually more privileged, so it's okay to say horrible shit about them. This leads to all sorts of bizarre convolutions, like shitting on immigrant children because the government allegedly spends more on their welfare than it spends on kids who were born here.

I don't think that's actually a very good model for what's going on

you've seen those views, or you've seen the totality of american politics explained by the model of punching up or punching down

Yep, you said it far better than I did. This is why I am very unlikely to vote Republican again unless they make a complete turnaround on many of their social issues stances. A lot of people like to (cynically IMO) say that there's no appreciable difference between the two parties. I disagree wholeheartedly.
