More than that, what can make me not want to see a show and think badly of the fandom is seeing it being described as "flawless" 'cause obsessive fans that put a show on a pedestal are annoying and no show can live up to such standards.

True.

I already don't want to see this show, just because over over-squeeing on tumblr.

For me, I'd really like to watch it from the beginning/in chronological order instead of just catching whatever episodes might be on TV at any given time. But absolutely none of the people posting about it all the damn time on my Tumblr dash or Twitter feed will tell me where I can do so legally (and that's the key thing--I'd rather legally support it instead of resorting to YouTube or torrents), and that kind of selfishness is threatening to turn me off of it altogether.

Starting in May, Steven Universe (and a bunch of other CN shows) will legally be on hulu.

You can find them here! I think they're posted by the creators http://theworldofstevenuniverse.blogspot.mx/2014/03/01x56-steven-universe-english.html

I don't understand why people avoid a show just because of how the fans are. Choose to go into it with no expectations, and then either you like it, or you don't.

Sometimes, the fanbase is so tied to its source material, it's kind of difficult for some people to not go in without even the slightest association.

This. It's why it took me a while to start it. And I'm still not overly impressed with it. They make this show out to be SUCH A DEEP OMG kind of show and all I see is...Garnet riding around in a child's car. And Amethyst is freakin' Rainbow Dash turned up to eleven and is ridiculously annoying.

MLP had a strong starting two episodes before it became slice of life, but even the slice of life had a bit more aubstance to it. This show is missing that and it's boring.

I do wanna make a gemsona though.

I kinda feel like SU has an overarching plot, even if it's not really focused on, and MLP doesn't really? It just has a bunch of small subplots.

Also, I don't think Amethyst and Rainbow Dash are actually that similar when you get down to it - they present very similarly but for really, really different reasons. (I guess it makes sense that I love them both though! Amethyst is probably my favorite gem, though it's a near thing since all three of them are awesome.)

Uh...how can you say MLP doesn't when the last two season do? Plus, everything was leading up to Twilight becoming a princess.

???

I dislike Dash these days and Amethyst NEEDS to stop fucking around. That shit right there is what pisses me off and why I find her so annoying. >_< I'm not even a Pearl fan (i find her boring) and I sympathize with her SO MUCH over Amethyst.

I honestly thought I'd LIKE Amethyst, but ugh, she drives me up a wall. And why does she have to be teh purple one, grr.

To be fair, I stopped watching MLP after season 3, and everything before that was filler except the two-parters. (not that that's a bad thing for a show like MLP.) I tried to watch a few episodes after that, but I felt the quality had sharply declined. And actually RD's character [mis]development was a big part of the reason. She stopped being interesting and cool and started being annoying and caricaturized. :( She's my favorite so I really just want to associate her with the way she is early on, especially S1 and 2, in my mind.

Amethyst doesn't fuck around nearly as much as Steven imo (probably because he's a kid, but still, sometimes I fear for his self-preservation instinct...). She goofs off but at heart I believe she takes things just as seriously as Pearl and Garnet. What "fucking around" exactly bothers you? To me she's just loud and sometimes careless. And while I love all three of them, Pearl can be bossy and controlling towards Amethyst, which hits a sore spot for me. Sometimes she's right, and it's an issue of safety, but other times she just needs to give the girl her space. :/

Well, to be honest, they improved on RD in the last season. I actually think she was on her way to being better in the Wonderbolt Academy episode in Season 3. She was still cocky, that's just Rainbow, but she showed her TRUE SELF, the season 1 self, when the other pegasus that she was paired with was a reckless, uncaring little shit.

I just had an issue with her just doing random things, like turning into Pearl and slapping her ass making dumb noises. Things like that are bugging the shit out of me. DX. I just can't help it. Garnet's a bit stiff, but I like her. Steven...gets to me at times, I admit, both in the "aww, cute" and the "ugh, shut up" ways. I like his dad though.

I don't hate Pearl I just find her boring. And I started watching it just because it's so saturated everywhere.

Have to admit though, the episode with eh moving moss wasn't too bad, save for the mayor's kid, he was just...ugh.

This isn't exactly a show that you can judge based on the first few episodes. Every episode is like a puzzle piece, and the further you progress in the season the more the pieces start fitting together and giving you a better sense of the overarching story. There are things much bigger than birthday parties going on in Steven's world.

tl;dr wait until the midseason episode "Mirror Gem" before you make a judgment, because that's when things really start to take off.

I was gonna say this, but you phrased it better.

I originally started watching SU after a friend recommended it, and I wasn't too impressed because I wasn't sure if it would ever develop a bigger plot, or if the characters would get more... I mean, I understand now that early Steven had to be sort of an obnoxious careless goofball so that his character development would feel more effective, and real children can be a lot like that, so it's understandable. And in retrospect, I appreciate the way he's been written. But back when there were only like ten episodes out and I couldn't tell for sure if there was going to be remarkable character development for him or not, it was kind of a "is he gonna be like this for the entire series...?" thing, which could have gotten tiresome if that had turned out to be the case.

Now I also really appreciate how cohesive the third-person limited viewpoint of the narrative has been. You see that a lot more in books than movies or TV, and even there it's usually from a character who's more integrated into the big picture from the start, or at least GETS integrated very quickly. I always used to re-imagine narratives from the POV of some side character; there's just something about that that's always appealed to me.

And the use of foreshadowing and small details that become important later, and the way we get pieces to these narrative puzzles and have to piece it together, I feel like it's been done in SU in a very skilled and well-planned way. And it feels true to how it often works in the real life, too.

I think I'm about 10 eps away from catching up, and man, I'm impressed with Steven's character development. They've managed to do quite a lot for what's ultimately a silly cartoon with a loose overarching plot. (Though maybe the plot is consolidating at this point? I just finished the episode where Greg got that wailing stone signal to receive the message from Lapis, which was pretty intense. Maybe that's just leading up to the S1 finale?)
