The whole "GEMSONA" craze in the Steven Universe fandom that's been blowing up lately really makes me worry that it's gonna cause the show's popularity to collapse in on itself and make non-fans have an innate negative opinion of it much like what "bronies" did to my little pony, which would just be inexcusable considering how fucking flawless of a show it is

i know it's stupid to think that but i've seen similar things happen in the past so I can't help but be apprehensive about OC fads in general

LOL That's already kind of happened, it's not due to the gemsona thing though it's because the Steven Universe fandom has had a lot of vocal fans be super annoying about various wank.

And the way it exploded on tumblr made non fans get annoyed with it fast (heck even people who are okay with the series but not super fans got annoyed.)

And the show isn't flawless either. Sorry.

More than that, what can make me not want to see a show and think badly of the fandom is seeing it being described as "flawless" 'cause obsessive fans that put a show on a pedestal are annoying and no show can live up to such standards.

'May I point out how perfect and flawless my favorite show is' is annoying as hell. Plus it gives newcomers false expectations.

My beef with gemsonas is that a majority of them don't look like they'd fit in the show at all. Gems have distinct silhouettes, and a lot of these designs don't always have it, or they're cluttered with way too much junk that wouldn't work well in animation. Just look at the pilot designs versus what actually made it to air.

And then there's Dou Hong, who while a phenomenal artist, comes off as borderline narcissistic with their gemsonas sometimes, like with that 'Dousona' week. IMHO, I'd like to see them file off the Steven Universe serial numbers from their gem designs (and maybe take some of their Green Lantern and Young Justice incidental designs) and make their own thing from scratch someday, because they are genuinely good designs.

I don't mind the gemsonas. I mind the show being put on a pedestal and treated as if everything it does is SO IMPORTANT. Not only is untrue, but it ignores a lot of children's shows that trailblazed similar messages years or even decades before.

MORE good messages is always great, so yay on SU for including them, but I'm tired of people pretending SU is some kind of pioneer in a lot of aspects that tons of other shows got to first.

I was disappointed when I found out gemsonas were some Steven Universe thing. I like anthropomorphic gemstones but don't want it to be tied down to a cartoon.

That and Monster High. The ENTITLEMENT of wanting, no DEMANDING, that we must have a gay character, that we must have a polyship (frankie/holt/jackson, nevermind the fact that holt and jackson are just ONE person), etc, is so goddamn reminiscent of the bronies and their demands from Hasbro it just amazes me. But try telling them that.

Both those fandoms have basically hit that starting point or are going passed it and coming out beside the bronies.

I only started watching SU fairly recently so I'm not sure what might annoy people about this fandom, but I really like the show. Though I don't generally care for OCs in my fandoms, with the exception of Homestuck, so I don't really care for gemsonas.

I've somehow managed to duck most of the fandom, but not gonna lie, seeing it on F!S and the random bits people give me really makes me want to watch it.

Plus I just really like the character designs I've seen!
