I don't think it's so much 'making OCs is not allowed' (frankly, I'm over making fan characters in general myself these days), so much as it is the sheer volume of them. It is, admittedly, a lot like the OC/FC avalanche that came after My Little Pony, so I guess it boils down to your opinion on that whole aspect.

And tbh, I think the "hate bonner" is something that's been building up for a while now, and now that we've had a couple secrets expressing frustration/disappointment with the fandom, a lot of people probably feel it's "safe" enough to come forward and voicing similar opinions with the fandom as well and not have to worry about alienating friends who may be really into it and/or get anon hate over Tumblr. I've seen it happen with popular stuff like the MCU in general, Sherlock, Supernatural, MLP, et al. It's just how things go.
