I've somehow managed to duck most of the fandom, but not gonna lie, seeing it on F!S and the random bits people give me really makes me want to watch it.

Plus I just really like the character designs I've seen!

Don't do it. Steven Universe is everything wrong with modern cartoons in one direction, it's nothing but tumblr pandering to the extreme.

Anon, I really don't think tumblr is the cultural force you think it is. And even if it were... oh no, tumblr pandering! The horror, the horror! Anything but that!

the way the characters are drawn was a biggest put-off for me, tbh

You should give it a try!

Personally I kinda had to start watching twice - first time was when there were nine episodes out. There was stuff I was impressed with and stuff that I felt like it could have been done better, and some things where I thought I hoped they would take things to certain directions, but wasn't sure if they would. My interest kinda waned at that point.

After a while, I found out about some new, promising developments through popcultural osmosis, restarted from where I had left off, and got totally hooked.

I still feel like the first twenty or so episodes can be a bit hit-or-miss (although this is just one person's opinion, and there's definitely some good stuff there too), and it gets more consistently good after that. Probably helps that by then, you know something about the world building, and start to see plot and character developments going on.

(Also IMO Steven's voice sounded a bit grating in the early episodes, though this could just be my oversensitivity to some sounds. Then, luckily, vocal evolution happened.)

A friend of mine showed me a random episode (it's like, Steven's friend's mom wants to meet his mom? So the gems have to fuse?) and I quite enjoyed it! I didn't have any expectations and was pleasantly surprised. (I think I had it confused with Gravity Falls or something.)

Also, the fact that another anon showed up to say it's shitty tumblr baiting just made me want to watch it more. WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN? Are there gay people in this show or something? Furries?

*slight spoilers*

One of the characters is a gem fusion of 2 females, and one of the writers said that the 2 females are romantically involved. So yup, there's gay people on the show.

Fandom stuff aside, SU is a neat, cute little show, IMO.

Gay people? In MY subtext of children's entertainment?

*monocle pop!*

--Rogan

(No but seriously, I have a kiddie sci-fi series of books from the mid-90s with gay aliens in it in the same way. Steven Universe sounds like an admirable continuation of a twenty-year tradition.)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you liked the episode!

Well, there are like... some characters with different body types and racial backgrounds and like... female characters with actual roles. (And gay people. Kind of. As much as they can get away with on Cartoon Network.) And it's sort of normalized part of the setting instead of being this "Very Special Episode Only" content.

I guess some people see that as "Tumblr pandering". The show creator, when asked about this, said something along the lines of "well that's just how people in the real world are", which... yeah.

Might be the best to watch the show more or less in order, though, since there actually is a continuous bigger plotline going on behind the slice-of-life stuff, and there's usually at least some relevant-again-later details or foreshadowing in most episodes.

The horror, the horror. Truly, all of children's entertainment is going to hell in a handbasket because of such pandering. *eyeroll* Think of the children.

I prefer to watch things in order anyway, so that works just fine for me! Maybe I'll vote for it to come up in Cartoon Night at some point.

You might need to power through some of the early episodes, cause Steven took awhile to grow on me. But it's worth it for the world building alone. I just love how they dropped subtle clues that paid off later but in a completely organic way.

Thanks for the warning! Is the entire first season a wash, like I've heard about Parks and Rec?

[personal profile] thezmage 2015-04-27 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No, there's good stuff all throughout. It just took me 10 or so episodes to stop thinking "I would enjoy this show a lot more if Steven wasn't in it"

Ah, that's not so bad, I can totally handle that, especially since I've been forewarned now. And Garnet and Pearl alone, from what little I saw of them, would be enough to keep me interested.

His character development has been pretty impressive though. I'm not entirely sure where the change from "this twerp can be kinda obnoxious" to "what an admirable sweet child, can I keep him?" took place, but that was a thing that happened.
