Fandoms you're surprised don't exist or are miniscule

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
... or know why they don't exist/are small but wish they weren't.

List the fandom in the subject.

Parks and Recreation

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I am surprised there's not a fandom given that it does seem to be an internet darling, if nothing else. And yes, it's a sitcom, but it's a fairly clever sitcoms that in a lot of ways seems aimed towards the fandomy sort. The only comms I ever found for it were dead or really quiet or just about the Ben/Leslie fanfic. (Which I'm all for, but... no one's written fic about Pawnee? Really?)

No obvious slash ships.

I think sitcoms in general just don't attract large fandoms. I'm a lifelong fan of F.R.I.E.N.D.S., and the fic for the show is pretty paltry, considering it lasted for 10 seasons. And even the existing fic has very little to offer by way of ship variation.

Fic for 30 Rock seems to be much the same.

Also, I think fandom is general tends to build up around/flock to media with fantastical world-building- the supernatural, werewolves, witches, etc. Since most, if not all, sitcoms are essentially set in our world, they don't have as much to offer as escapism.

Naoki Urasawa's Monster

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Just...why is it SO SMALL?

There's a lot of quality fanworks (including the amazing people who translated Another Monster -- praise Jesus!) but I really expected there to be more people.

I don't know, I love Monster but I never really felt the need to pursue any fandom about it, really. It feels pretty complete on its own.

I also think Urasawa's work is very... auteur-y, in a way? So the idea of reading fanworks about it is a little stranger to me than it might be in other cases.

Fanficcers are probably satisfied with what Urasawa's provided and feel no need to expand on it. Fanartists are probably intimidated by all the adult characters and find his art style difficult to emulate, so they don't bother trying. That's my theory, at least, since I can find people to discuss it but that's it.

Speaking of Naoki Urasawa, I'd LOVE to see more fanwork of Pluto. I loved that shit, but unfortunately, it's damn near impossible to tag or search properly.

Rescue Me

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I was always surprised this show didn't have a fandom. Especially since there is a huge amount of slash that could be written for that show.

I always want to discuss the episodes when it was airing but never really found a place for it.

Re: Rescue Me

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh! Interested in Rescue Me slash! :D

Mad Men

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not that surprised there's no fandom, given that most of the major characters are unlikable (or go from likable to unlikable depending on the episode/season/scene), and while don't know a lot of Mad Men fans IRL, most of the ones I do know aren't really the sort to get into fandom. Though arguably there's pockets of fans at more general TV show boards, where there'll be specfic threads or forums for Mad Men. Still, a lot of them have been quiet when the show hasn't been on air, and that's generally been when I'm up to discussing things the most.

[personal profile] littlecagedbird 2015-04-26 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
There's no fandom for Mad Men? Bummer...I would totally be involved in it if I wasn't always half a season behind.

Sirens

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured that Sirens would have more of a fandom especially since one of the main characters is a gay black man and there's another character who is asexual, which is pretty rare on television. Tumblr loves that shit. Maybe it's because Sirens is a comedy? Those don't tend to get as large of fandoms as other shows (obviously there are some exceptions though)

Re: Sirens

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it has shit tumblr loves but it also has characters who can be kind of offensive, because that's the tone of the comedy.

I love Sirens so in a way I'm glad tumblr hasn't latched onto it because they'd inevitably not get the jokes.

Re: Sirens

[personal profile] mekkio 2015-04-26 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
True. It's a non-sketch comedy that's on cable rather than a network. Those don't get much fandom love. Though I love the show. Plus, it's not super PC despite having a nice diverse cast. (Which I actually like because it feels more like real life rather than a preachy scripted comedy.) There are ton things on this show I can see tumblr flipping their lids over.

Agatha Christie's Poirot

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2015-04-26 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Just... Why? It's based on one of the most popular crime fiction series in the world, it's excellently done, it had great ratings, it ran for a bazillion years. Where is any semblance of a fandom?

Yes! There was a livejournal community, but it has pretty much died since the last tv version came out. I love it so much and would love to talk about it.

I read so much Agatha Christie as a teen. I've only watched a bit of the tv series but it was seriously perfect in every way. (It's on my netflix list so maybe I'll eventually get around to it. Sad there isn't much of a fandom though... Poirot would be the best fandom for case fic.)

The Unit

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
OTOH it is a military show so I can see why it might not have attracted a huge following. But on the other hand, all those pretty guys! I was surprised there wasn't more slash.

(Also, I wish the fandoms existed or were larger for all of my childhood interests. I know exactly why they're not - because they're old - but I wish there were more people who remembered or just discovered them.)

(always and forever) Justified

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-04-26 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's brilliant, frequently hilarious with wonderful writing and acting, has complex and interesting female characters and the two main male characters have lots of slash potential.

It should be bigger!

Into the Woods

[personal profile] littlecagedbird 2015-04-26 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know much about theater fandom, but I figured this one would be a little bit bigger than it is, especially in light of the movie adaptation coming out only a few months ago.

But it's tiny. There's only about a hundred fics on FF.net and the ones on AO3 are mostly crossposted from FF.net, and exactly zero of them are about Jack's Mother. :(

Decoder Ring Theatre

[personal profile] leikomgwtfbbq 2015-04-27 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's a really neat podcast split into two segments--The Red Panda Adventures and Black Jack Justice. Respectively, a pulp superhero adventure story set in 1930s-1940s Toronto, and a hardboiled detective series in the 1950s.

It's just not very well-known, but I wish it were. Really good stuff; the banter between various characters is funny, the stories are engaging, and the characters themselves are really interesting on their own.

Somebody join this fandom with me plz ;___;

Halt and Catch Fire seems small.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
But the series just began last year so maybe that is the reason.
