He was also told by his doctor, he admitted, to take time off and get it checked out. He refused to do so, mainly because of machismo. Any negative effects on his behaviour due to the extra stress are entirely his own doing.

If he'd taken the time off then he'd either have been gone for a couple of episodes, or more likely the BBC would have pushed back the series a couple of months to accommodate him. Both far better than what happened due to him coming in when he wasn't fit and knew it. This is why presenteeism is worse than absenteeism.
