I never really got the fuss over color-coded secrets until this one.

The Thick of It is cynical and satirical whereas The West Wing is hopeful and aspirational, but unlike many other people, OP was more inspired to get into politics by TTOI than by TWW.

I understood the secret, I was just annoyed by its format.

TTOI made me realize that I was Jamie at work when I really needed to be Malcolm. I have a new job now.

This is the antithesis of this. This glamorizes politics, whereas this unapologetically satairizes it. There are no “morally admirably” characters in this. I’ve heard people say they were inspired to get into politics by this show. Weirdly, this did nothing for me…but I do want to get into politics now because of this show.

Messed up OP is messed up.

went to a party over the weekend where a similar discussion took place. I'm assuming this is a common observation, and not assuming this was at the same party. Either way, it is a guilty pleasure of mine seeing people poke pins in the pomposity of The West Wing. It was a good show but it's not holy scripture.

It's, in some sense, difficult because it feels sometimes like most of the people who still care about West Wing at this point are the people who do love it pretty unreservedly.

I agree, though, it's a really deeply flawed show in ways that are really interesting to trace. It also happens to piss me off in precisely the same amount as I love watching it. Which is always interesting.

I tried to like The West Wing but the sentimentality was too much for me.

As a Brit, it worries me that the only way I can take my political drama is with a huge dose of cynicism, but the other way just repels me. It seems so self-deluding and simple minded, and in fact more open to abuse. Idealism makes me much more nervous than outright self-interest.

Uh...as a huge West fan..."unreservedly"? Haha....um, no.

The West Wing is like the political equvalent of a superhero movie. It is not meant to be remotely related to reality. It's about superficial wish-fulfillment fantasy and great characters. And you know what? I've never seen a fan of it claim otherwise. All the ~b-b-but idealism is so dangerous!!11~ concern-trolling has come from non-fans who seem bizarrely convinced (without any justification I've ever seen) that fans take this shit at face value and think politics is really like that. When actually, the concern sounds like telling people that superhero movies are awful and dangerous because that fact that they posit some people have powers that are superior to others promotes racial supremacy or something. It's just gonna get you a blank stare from fans.

If there's something WW fans *are* annoyingly over-serious about, it's Sorkin's dialogue. It's fun, but 70% of its quality comes from the actors managing to deliver really weird-sounding stuff with conviction. You only have to compare the scene clips with the transcripts to figure that out...

Never got into The West Wing, but I LOVE TTOI. Have you seen Veep? It's by the same people as TTOI, but is about US politics.

And anyway, I think TTOI is a great inspiration, there's a lot of realism to be found, couple with a healthy dose of swearing and cynicism. Sounds like good practice to me.
