You can be focused, show a deep attention for detail and research without being obsessed though. It's called dedication, or enthusiasm, or passion.

Obsession does cross a line into a negative behavior. Obsession implies that if the person had to be without the object of their obsession, it would cause them actual harm, which has no positive spin whatsoever. Obsession is intruding and destructive, it's not pleasant or positive.

(Speaking as a severe OCD sufferer, btw. I don't consider anyone suggesting that obsession is bad is ableist because it is. It's life-limiting and deeply harmful, and I suspect that anyone who thinks it's a great thing has never actually experienced true obsession).

That was my thinking too. Obsession by definition is uncontrollably focusing so hard on something that it has a negative impact on your life.

"Dieting" is fine but that's not what "anorexia" means. Same thing.

I get the feeling that most people use the word obsession to mean pathological focus, or focus that is harmful.

I mean, look at the definition of the word: an idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person's mind.

That it "intrudes" is the key -- because then it's disruptive and you're no longer in control anymore.

DA

I get the feeling most people don't use it that way. When fans claim they're "obsessed" with something they usually mean they have an intense interest, not that they have intrusive thoughts or pathological focus on a random pairing.

The problem is that the real definition's been lost. Just like "literally"

nayrt

This.

This is basically an argument of semantics. Pathological obsessive behavior is a very different thing to the colloquial "omg I'm so obsessed with XYZ right now!"

It sounds as though OP is conflating the response to the former with an experience of the latter.

Alot of people use "obsession" as hyperbole.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly--it's like the colloquial "oh I'm so depressed about this" when you just feel down or upset about something. It doesn't mean the person has clinical depression.

Well, no. When people use literally, they're using it as a superlative, yes, but by doing so, going against the meaning of the word.

Obsession on the other hand, is used as hyperbole, with recognition of its meaning (I am so into this it's unhealthy!) and so the two aren't the same?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"An idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person's mind."

That can be bad, and extremely unpleasant, but it's not inherently, intrinsically negative.

Plus it's one thing to say it can cause problems, and another to judge people for it - no one can help having OCD, or being on autistic spectrum, after all.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a way constant, intrusive thoughts isn't negative?

Please tell me how that works.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
There are negative aspects to things which also have positive aspects to them.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
And I'm asking you, in all sincerity, what the positive aspect of being constantly, endlessly bombarded by intrusive thoughts that mean you can't live a normal life might be.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Intrusive by definition means something that is unwanted and negative.

It's not an obsession if the thoughts aren't intrusive.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously thank you. I swear people who spend all day screeching, "THIS IS ABELIST! YOURE ABELIST! THATS ABELIST! EVERYTHING IS ABLEIST!!" have no fucking idea what actual "ableism" is, and have probably never met an actual disabled person in their life. Good grief op you're giving me second hand embarrassment.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeesh. I have an autism spectrum disorder, and over half the time I see people in fandom spaces complaining about supposed ableism, they are either obviously doing it to be self-important, or to give their own, subjective opinions and interpretations more validation.

Can be kinda tiresome to constantly see people go all "People who don't think my ship is canon, are ABLEIST because one of the characters could possibly be read as autistic!!! And not supporting the ship means you hate her! And HOMOPHOBIC because it not being mutually canon is an example of the *sad lesbian* archetype which you must then support!"
'Kay thanks for informing me that I secretly hate myself. I had been under the impression that I found the situation RELATABLE as an autistic lesbian who never manageds to communicate my feelings to anyone I'm interested in, so I'm "doomed" to be forever alone (maybe).

No but seriously, I would appreciate it if people didn't use actual issues that can cause trouble for me in the real world, as petty buzzwords to make their subjective unimportant opinions sound more valid than other people's subjective unimportant opinions. You people are allowed to like or dislike fictional works/characters/pairings without having to prove a moral superiority about it. Really. I promise.
