about ableism

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I can imagine the kind of comments this is going to get, so here's a quick refresher on ableism.

The assumption that non-disabled are the norm is one of the foundations of ableism. So the argument "but not all people who X [obsess, hallucinate, whatever] are disabled so prejudice against that isn't ableist" is false and missing the point.

If something is a feature of a disability, discrimination or prejudice against it is ableist, because amongst the people you'll be discriminating against are all the disabled people who have that feature of their disability. And frequently you'll have no idea who is disabled - again, the assumption that non-disabled are the norm is one of the foundations of ableism. (Example from RL - people with cerebral palsy being thrown out of bars or denied access to public transport because it's assumed their slurred speech and/or their movements mean they are drunk.)

Obsession can be a good force of motivation for people who aren't motivated by the usual/expected things.

You can be focused, show a deep attention for detail and research without being obsessed though. It's called dedication, or enthusiasm, or passion.

Obsession does cross a line into a negative behavior. Obsession implies that if the person had to be without the object of their obsession, it would cause them actual harm, which has no positive spin whatsoever. Obsession is intruding and destructive, it's not pleasant or positive.

(Speaking as a severe OCD sufferer, btw. I don't consider anyone suggesting that obsession is bad is ableist because it is. It's life-limiting and deeply harmful, and I suspect that anyone who thinks it's a great thing has never actually experienced true obsession).

This feels oddly abstract, like there are all these people ranting about how bad and wrong the general concept of obsession is. I can't say it's a term I see very often, but it seems like it would be more associated with specific unhealthy actions.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, no. Obsessions are unhealthy, and I say this as someone who has been diagnosed with OCD for over two decades.

You're confusing an obsession (an unhealthy fixation on something) with an intense interest, which is fine and perfectly normal. Most people have one or two things they're very interested in and knowledgeable about. The difference is that an interest is not all-consuming the way an obsession is. THAT is why obsessions are unhealthy, bad things-- because the brain assigns them a disproportionate amount of importance and causes you to lose perspective.

It's used in a very specific wa in fandom, though. Most often the unhealthy obsession with a celebrity.

Since when do people say obsession is bad?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I've legit never heard that.

The only times I can see obsession as being bad is when it's in the sense that someone thinks characters are real (which happens) or engages in otherwise unhealthy behavior.

Obsession may be bad in OCD, but it's not unhealthy or negative for many autistic people (and yes it forms part of the diagnosis).

I'm not going to read the rest of this thread because I can't deal with this bullshit.

There's no winning when an argument comes down to each person's interpretation of a particular word's definition and use.

Regarding Ableism...

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry but expecting the world to understand and bend itself to your will is ridiculous.

There's literally thousands of ways the body and mind can be disordered. Even medical professionals don't know them all.

So expecting that the average person will understand your disorder/disability and cater to it is the height of silliness.

Positive or negative, I really don't give a shit. I just think we need to stop censoring words because they can possibly be linked to an -ism.

If a word has one and only one meaning and it relates to an -ism, then I understand getting rid of it. But words that are in common use can stay in common use.

I say this as someone who could have quite a few of those words used against them, but I feel this censorship is going overboard.

But being an obsessive person doesn't mean they have Autism or OCD. If you have a disability where obsession is a trait then hopefully you can lessen it with help. But if you don't have those problems being obsessive is not a good thing. I don't suffer from either one of those disabilities but I struggle with being an obsessive person. My mind latches on to something and I have to know everything about. I have to read, watch TV shows or documentaries, research online every bit of information I can find. I won't be sated until I know everything I can on a subject. It takes so much of my time and energy and then when I am satisfied with what I know I drop the subject and feel empty until the next thing catches my brain. I have been doing this all my life. I can remember being 4 or 5 and obsessed with old falling down barns.

OK so this turned into more of a confessional but maybe it will help others see that obsession sucks.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
As someone with OCD, I find more worrisome that some people think an obsession can be a good thing.

(And it's possible to focus intensely, pick up details and do in-depth research without being obsessed over something)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Do you have autism and/or OCD?

I lack the former, but I have the latter, and my obsessive thoughts are nothing at all like my fannish obsessions. I find the comparison kind of insulting, actually.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 12:19 am (UTC)(link)

Obsession is just unhealthy. It really is. No matter what kind of a positive spin you try to put on it, it's not a good thing. Call me ableist, I don't give a fuck, but it is not, nor will it ever be a positive thing.

As for fandom obsessiveness, it can get pretty scary. Once again, not a good thing.

Comments above show it's endemic.
