Obsession may be bad in OCD, but it's not unhealthy or negative for many autistic people (and yes it forms part of the diagnosis).

I'm not going to read the rest of this thread because I can't deal with this bullshit.

This. Obsession has its down sides and its up sides.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
If it has up sides then it is not an obsession, it's just a passion.

An obsession is something that you can't stop thinking about. It will not leave your head, and it makes it next to impossible to think about anything else. There is nothing positive about that.

Sorry, but my psychiatrist and I have discussed this at length and he entirely disagrees with your opinion.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
And every psychiatrist I've ever seen disagrees with yours. It sounds like you're conflating a genuine obsession with something else.

It sounds like you don't know the definition of obsession as it applies to autism spectrum condition.

Think I'll trust a specialist over an anon, sorry.

Please explain to me how an obsession can be a positive thing, then.

"One person says this so it must be true!"

"But they may also limit people's involvement in other activities and cause distress or anxiety."

That sounds like the textbook definition of something unhealthy right there.

"May".

You really sound too much like a troll to be worth discussing this with.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the person who linked a blog entitled "juststimming" as a reputable source for why obsession is totally a healthy thing see you just don't understand.

But thanks for showing your lack of credibility so I can stop wasting my time here.

Yes, because obviously a blog by an autistic person answering your question of how obsession can be positive is entirely irrelevant.

Wankgoblin is pretty much the perfect word for you, really.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'll totally take an autistic kid's blog over verified professionals literature!

When I was suicidal, I thought suicide was a perfectly legitimate way of dealing with shit. If I wrote a blog post about how committing suicide would solve all a person's problems, would the fact that I was suicidal and had clinical depression make me right and mean that suicide is a healthy way to deal with things?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Being autisic and being suicidal are not comparable.

Stop trolling.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
And those links also say that if those obsessive behaviors are impacting a persons life/learning/social situation/people around them, then it needs addressing because it's not a good thing.

And you don't know what "if" means.

Go waste someone else's time, I'm going to bed.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
No, I don't think you know what 'if' means.

Add my three to your count, and go get yourself to a competent professional as soon as you can.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'd go check your psychiatrist's license. I hope they didn't get it out of a cereal box.

Trolling disabled people going well for you this evening? Feeling good about your life plan? Ever considered acquiring a new personality?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
If someone was getting completely whackadoodle information from their doctor about how to treat their MS, and someone said, "hey, you should find a better doctor," would you consider that "trolling a disabled person?"

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
These replies you're getting, oy vey.

They could read thousands of other blogs by thousands of other autistic people writing about exactly the same thing, but no, we're all "special snowflakes." But no, they're totally not ableist.

It's cute that you think that all of us who think it's utter bullshit are neurotypical.
