Movie recs?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
So, I pretty much never watch movies (seriously, I've never even seen any Star Wars or Matrix movies before, I'm awful). But I've suddenly got the urge to have this huge movie marathon.

Is there anything recent I definitely shouldn't miss out on? I'm cool with any genre except horror.

What types of things do you like, though? If your into action and scifi things, I'd recommend the Marvel Movies. Iron Man is a good place to start to see if you like that kind of thing.

Well I'm not kidding when I say I like almost any genre, haha! I do love superheroes, but haven't actually seen much from the MCU (mostly because there's so much to choose from by now I'm not sure which to pick), so I'll keep Ironman in mind, thank you!

My advice? Do what I've been doing, and watch them all in order of release. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Cinematic_Universe#Films

Isn't The Babadook horror?

Mmmmmm. I think it is billed as a horror movie, but I found nothing scary about it. It is more of a psychological thriller with a bit of horror thrown in.

Definitely Guardians of the Galaxy.

Does it have to be recent? Because most of my recommendations are gonna date back at least 30 years.

(Blade Runner is one!)

Nah, of course not! The only time I ever actually go out of my way to watch movies is when they're old enough to have come out before my parents were born (which is also why I was like, "hey, let's try something new!" here, haha), so I'm totally open to old recommendations.

Could you list a couple?

I can! I have some horror recs too (really seminal films like Alien) but I will separate them for you.

Blade Runner (1982 film that originated the popular image of cyberpunk)
Dr. Strangelove (1960s dark comedy lampooning the Cold War, the US military is not portrayed in a good light)
Apocalypse Now Redux (probably the most seminal Vietnam war film, essentially an update on the novel "Heart of Darkness")
Stalker (1979 Soviet sci-fi film about an empty and abandoned zone filled with strange anomalies)
The Warriors (a NYC gang is chased across the city to get back to their home turf)
Deep Cover (black cop gets involved in a drug sting operation, one of the last of the 80s neo noir movement)
Trouble Man (obscure 1972 crime/exploitation film about a black "fixer" in LA who gets set up for murder)
Robocop (a cop in futuristic Detroit is nearly murdered and ends up being used as an experimental cyborg police officer)
Escape from New York (a very talented criminal with an ex-military background is recruited to rescue the president from Manhattan which has been converted into an anarchic, open-air prison -- big influence on Metal Gear)

Horror movies:

Night of the Living Dead (1968 version, black and white, basically the first modern zombie movie -- not as gory as the sequels and movies it would inspire, largely due to Tom Savini, the special effects genius, being in Vietnam at the time)
The Terminator (an evil robot from the future is sent back in time to kill the mother of an anti-robot resistance leader before he can be born)
Videodrome (very weird movie by David Cronenberg about a sleazy cable TV exec who discovers a pirate broadcast that seems to center around BDSM and snuff porn, the film is essentially an exploration of the relationship between television and its audience)
Alien (seminal sci-fi horror film about a crew of a space freighter coming across an uninhabited planet and meeting a very hostile organism. Prominent for somewhat originating the "strong female character" trope. Followed by a much more well-known, action-oriented sequel, Aliens, about a military unit coming into contact with a horde of the aforementioned organisms and not having a good time, basically invented the modern "bug war" trope alongside the book Starship Troopers, which was an influence.)

Thanks so much for this! I'll definitely check these out.

And yeah, the horror exception was more about "I don't want nightmares" rather than me actually having anything against the genre (I also miss out on a hell of a lot of cool-sounding video games because of this, haha), though the ones you listed don't seem the type for that? Anyway, I appreciate this! Thanks again.

You're welcome!

And no, I figured that was your reason for skipping horror, but some of the ones I listed are very influential (Alien especially subverted a lot of tropes of the sci-fi genre.) If you actually watch them, I would probably recommend saving Videodrome for last and working your way up to it, as it's pretty nightmare inducing with its focus on body horror as well as the BDSM/snuff angle. (What do you expect from David Cronenberg?)

Recent? Well, okay. Try just about everything has or is written by Brit Marling. The Sound of My Voice and Another Earth have sci-fi, mind fuck, and The East might have conspiracy, eco terrorism, and Ellen Page being a cute grouch.

Here's some non-spec movies I've seen lately that are really good:

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (the sequel is good too)
The Judge
Laggies
The 100-Foot Journey
Philomena
Wish I Was Here
The Theory of Everything
