Oh god, I know folks who have to go gluten-free, and everything I've seen and heard make it sound HELLISH. Food allergies suck. I'm sorry.

This is still a fairly new thing for me, and I have to be careful not to be too relaxed about what I eat, because that's when I make myself sick. I have to be really careful eating at places that claim to have a gluten free menu, but cook or prep everything together / don't check the gluten status of individual ingredients.

Sometimes I get frustrated and I want to eat normal food.

I haven't had vegemite on toast in over 6 months and I have cravings. I can replace toast with the gluten free version, but I tried their vegemite alternative, and it's not even close. The things I've been eating since I was a kid are the hardest. When I feel unwell and want comfort food, it's always gluteny.

I mean, I can stop myself from getting horrible symptoms with just a diet change, so I feel lucky in some ways.

Yeah, true, but gluten's in fucking EVERYTHING, and the alternatives all look hella expensive. (One of my intolerant friends at least spent a fair amount of time in Japan, so knew a lot of rice dishes, but STILL.)

I would have a HELLISH time trying to go gluten-free. Pretty much ALL my preferred carb sources are gluten-y. You have all my sympathy and respect for being able to keep up with it.

Thanks man.

Yeah. I'm a big carb eater. Some things have good alternatives, and some really don't. I miss frozen pizza so much that I have almost sexual dreams about eating it.

I need Glutenholics Anonymous.

Yeah, while I'm heavily reliant on pasta, bread, tortillas, and Cheerios. Giving up gluten would be HELL--and my food stamps budget would WEEP.

Thank god our minor food allergy is easy to avoid: raw broccoli.

Raw but not cooked?

Yeah my food budget is a mess. I don't know if anything is gross unless I try it, so I've bought a lot of expensive things I don't end up liking enough to even finish. Gluten free ANZAC biscuits were a horrible disappointment. I think I'm just going to tweak my old recipe and make my own with gluten free things.

I know right? Apparently that happens sometimes; it's something to do with certain chemicals changing when cooked? *shrugs* I don't know, apparently our mom had the same thing. (Then she became allergic to ALL broccoli, much to her dismay since she actually likes the stuff.)

Yeah, gluten free is so expensive. So frustrating.
