IDK, I can totally see a young Minerva deciding she didn't want to talk to the other peons on the bus and pretending to read a book on arimathacy (sp?) in Ancient Gaelic to throw everybody off.

As opposed to modern Greek? And what does Minerva have to do with it?

*is confused*

So wait, you carry around the Ancient Greek Harry Potter at all times?

Minerva McGonagall (because Harry Potter) or Minerva the goddess (because Ancient Greek, though she'd have been called Athena by the Greeks)?

I read Harry Potter in German when I take the subway to work. People still bother me. I guess I should try Greek.

People talk to you on public transportation? Where do you live OP, I want go there because all I get is smartphone addicts.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
not OP, but you should come to Ames, Iowa. There is a fantastic bus system, and people will talk to you on the bus. Usually, though, they'll back off if you seem reluctant to talk to them.

Hell yeah, Iowa! Although you should come to Iowa City, not Ames. Hawkeyes>>>>>>>>>Cyclones

See, that's such a good overall culture - you have the option to meet people or not and not be stuck in the opposite situation.

This book seems like a good conversation starter. Huh, and it only costs... $36 on Amazon. A bit seep, but oh well.

I don't know where you are, but I just bought the Ancient Greek edition with the new British children's cover for only $16 in January off of amazon.

Honestly? I like the new cover better. ebay might be another option, I got the Irish edition for only $7 there.

Text: To put people off talking to me on the train, I pretended to be reading Harry Potter in Ancient Greek.

I know the book so well and recognize enough words it seems like I’m reading it, not just remembering it.

But I don’t know if Minerva would approve of me.

That's awesome.

Why on Earth would Minerva disapprove?

I have Harry Potter in Latin, to study Latin.

But honestly your method is confusing me. Any foreign language book would have the same effect.

And tbh I think I would be more inclined to talk to someone reading Harry Potter, especially in an ancient language. Because it's interesting, and everyone knows Harry Potter.

You'd be better off reading a non-famous English book.

FIVE POINTS FROM GRYFFINDOR!

I wouldn't talk to you (I talk to no one), but I would keep peeking the book to get a better glimpse of the title and be sure of the language it was in, because I would be intrigued. (I generally like ereaders, but I am a little sad it makes it harder for me to see what people are reading on public transit.)
