I think it's just part of the mindset that's popular now where fans find out a horrible thing about their idol and then see their whole body of work as invalid. It's very black or white thinking, I agree. Lennon isn't an idol of mine. I admire him as a composer and musician and artist, but I'm not under any illusion that he was necessarily a great husband or father. But not everyone cares to (or is able to) distinguish between those two areas of a person's life.

too much edge

i can't maintain

nah, don't worry, I've always hated john lennon for as long as I can remember knowing who he was. he's always struck me as a horrible person too full of himself and too convinced of his own superiority.

Well I suppose it is more fashionable than hating him for being a commie or a jap lover.

I mean seriously, who cares about communism these days? There is no quicker way to make yourself sound irrelevant than to be worked up about communism.

Being a musical genius and being a complete asshole are not mutually exclusive. You can acknowledge his contribution to music and enjoy it for what it is, but there's no point in ignoring the fact that he was a woman-beating piece of shit at the same time. It's just the truth of the matter.

And it somewhat disturbs me that you're basically saying that "everyone else did it, so stop complaining."

I do agree that invalidating his work due to his actions is pointless, but going headlong in the other direction and idolizing him/excusing his drastic faults just because he made great music is just as bad.

Here's the thing: People know who he is and what he's done. It's really hard to be angry at a random man from that time period who may or may not have done something terrible. Yes, you can be angry at the whole group (and you should be), but unless you know exactly who they are specifically, you can't specifically tear them down. Also, just because others did it, that doesn't lessen his culpability - because there were many millions who didn't and he could have chosen to be one of them.

This, exactly this.

I love The Beatles, I love lots of Lennon's music. That doesn't mean I can't acknowledge he was a shit (and it doesn't matter less that someone was a shit just because they created any great music).

I want to know what happened in 1975...

... since the secret sort of implies that it ceased then.

I think they were maybe referring to the formation of The Beatles (1960) to Lennon's hiatus from the music industry (1975).

Text: From 1960-1975, millions of men treated women like crap at least some of the time.

Only one of them also wrote “Across the Universe”.

I know you think you’re cool for tearing down ond of your parents’ idols, but get the fuck over it.
