(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)wrestling is cool (even if I don't keep up with it)

Also, yes, it scripted. Yes, the participants are attempting to avoid actually hurting each. (Brock Lesner, who switches from MMA to WWE had an interesting remark about how he had to switch his mindset from MMA-- where you are trying to hurt people-- to WWE-- where you trying to avoid actually hurting people. I find the whole the whole acting aspect of the WWE infintely interesting, moreso than "real" violence.) ALSO, yes, people still get very hurt. (and are totally not just selling it, you can tell the difference and bloody or obviously painful matches are actually kind of scary, tbh.)
You bring up an interesting point, however. See, when I was 12-- hell, when I was 26-- I would've said the same as you: wrestling is dumb, fake, etc. I was struck by a horrible, misguided sense of superiority that I was somehow above the baser pleasures that wrestling provides (soap-operatic drama and violence, mostly, but it's also pleasantly quite kinky). None of us are immune to draw of human drama, violence and sex, however, and none of us is above our perfectly human enjoyment of it.
Re: WWE or NXT
Yeah, I had to actually walk away from the screen reading about that one fight between Undertaker and whatshisface, that ended up with dislocated shoulder, broken jaw, and near-death. I am astounded at the punishment those guys can take--PLUS Undertaker STARTED the match with a broken foot!

EDIT: on the plus side, though, learning about that fact actually helped me figure out something totally unrelated, so thanks, bashed-up wrestlers!
