I hated him. He said and did so many things that were so dickish. Meredith had plenty of dick moments of her own, especially in the later seasons, but he wasn't McDreamy for me.

For me, it's not even about his death. It's about the fact that the show creator just kills off characters constantly for cheap drama. The shooting was pushing it. The plane crash was just dumb. A car crash? Why the fuck do these characters even leave the house when they're dropping like flies??

I don't watch the show, but even I was annoyed by the character deaths. I hate cheap drama deaths, and it tends to be a major reason why I quit a lot of shows. Or don't start them to begin with.

See, while I did hate Derek, the reason I don't care was because the actor wanted to leave. It was either Derek dying or Derek leaving his wife and kids and never coming back. And that would have been so completely out of character. I felt the same way about Mark, who I did care about. He never would have left Sophia, so when the actor left dying was the only thing that made sense.

Are you sure he wanted to leave? I heard the actor wasn't expecting to be written off.

And it's not like death is the only option for a character leaving. There are plenty more. Death is just the easiest and laziest. It just takes more thought than "sure, car crash, whatever".

Yes. The actor wanted off, and had become really difficult on set because he didn't want to be there anymore. He had signed a 2 year contract, but he made it clear to everyone involved that he wanted to leave and focus on his racing.

And what other options were there? The only other one, really, was Derek leaving his wife and kids. And in my mind that is 1000x worse and completely out of character.

I don't watch the show, so maybe this wouldn't have worked, but what if his wife got a really good job offer across the country, and he decided to quit his own job so she could take it?

His wife is the main character on the show.
