You check your phone and you've missed a call

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
...from a number that doesn't belong to anyone you know, and when you try to call back (less than 10 minutes later) you get a canned message that "This number is no longer in service."

The next day you get a call from the same number and pick up just a minute too late. Same message when you try calling back.

How are they calling from a number that's "no longer in service"? And is this a red flag for a scam? Should I worry? I almost never get spam messages or calls from telemarketers, so I'm not sure what's going on.

SCAM! Scammy scam scam.

Or a ghost.

I'd prefer a ghost; a scam is so prosaic.

Block it and never think about it again. That's what I do.

I'm torn between that and curiosity.

The NSA accidentally hit the "callback" button when skimming your phone. Tru fax.

Bill collector, if you are in the US. Whoever had my house number before I got it was in deep trouble with bill collectors and I hate those calls more than I am capable of conveying.

uh-oh.

I don't think I have anything outstanding, though.

Most "companies" running phishing or spoofing schemes do this to protect themselves from bitch callbacks or even tracking. Your number is probably on their robo dial; maybe they're even trying to get a callback to confirm an active line for spoofing. Stop answering and eventually they'll mark you as a dead # and take you off the list. And if you ever get an unknown number and aren't sure if it's legit, plug it into Google and see if any spam/harassment forums pop up, to confirm it's some asshat you should block./worked for ATT

*bitchy callbacks. As in disgruntled people calling back to complain about being harassed.

THANK YOU

I didn't know you could Google a phone number!

I tried it--apparently this is a new number (out of Honea, SC) for a well-known credit card scam.

Thanks, anon!

DA

800Notes is also pretty good for finding info on mystery numbers. It is user updated, but a number of entries can help you find common characteristics revealing the source of the call.

You can google the number and see if anyone has put it I'm an id list? Could be an annoying survey or telemarketer or a scam. Block and move on. And if you do find out who it is - share on the phone id website!

(Something like who's number is this - not used for private identification, just if it's a scam or legit company)

Yeah, I got those too. For YEARS I kept getting damn robodialers in Spanish who WOULD NOT leave me alone, and I couldn't call them back for the same reason. It's just a scam, ignore it.

(And now apparently a DIFFERENT scammer has found this number; I've gotten three fucking calls since noon today!)
