I can live with character death! I can't live with cheap, awful character death that's just used to milk emotions out of its viewers, and has literally no narrative significance. No thanks.

Eh... Joss Whedon is the no 1 kill guy. He always said his dream was to shockingly kill someone who was listed in the main credits. And he's done that, several times. Just be prepared.
