It is the most common way that characters/actors leave the show.

Denny - died of a stroke after a heart transplant, but only after Izzie compromised his medical equipment to move him up the transplant list
Ellis - died while Meredith was having a near-death experience
George - hit by a bus (hell, he even already had a storyline out)
Adamson - shot by gunman
Percy - shot by gunman
Adele - died of a heart attack following surgery on Miranda's wedding day
Brooks - electrocuted
Henry - died on Christina's table
Lexie - plane crash
Mark - from injuries sustained in plane crash

Plus, Meredith's stepmother, Alex's father, George's father, April and Jackson's son, and Christina's Mayo Clinic mentor.

And, frankly, if Derek had to go, I would rather they killed him off then just have had him leave Meredith and their kids.
