Has using "!" in fandom fallen out of favor? Fandom!secrets, top!sexycharacter'sname, barista!AU...I feel like this is the only place anyone uses it anymore.

What are other places? Bug!John or, idk, evil!Doctor are some other examples. Can't say I've noticed a lot of ! in the past.

I honestly don't know how popular it is now, but I still use it! (Here or over at tumblr to tag. Example: Inquisitor!Cadash, f!shepard, m!hawke, etc.

I was going to reply that I see it all the time, but your response made me realize that it is pretty much only in the Dragon Age and Mass Effect fandoms.

That's mostly what I use it for, yes. (And mostly what I see other people use it with.) I do think people still tend to use it for AU's, but that's probably about it. (Maybe in other gaming fandoms? Like f!dragonborn and m!dragonborn might be a thing.)

I never really understood it. Is it meant to show your excitement at "particular version of"?

I use it, but I still don't get it.

No one really knows the exact origins for sure, but it's definitely not an excitement thing. Some people say it's a Usenet/UUCP thing (originating from the way mail was routed back in the day), and others say that it originated in The X-Files fandom as a reference to action figure naming conventions.
