(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)But like you said making decisions based off a cartoon is not the greatest idea. Steven is fictional, and in a lot of ways not like a real person. The writing makes it easy for him to be hopeful and for things to turn out the "right" way.
Real life doesn't work that way. Having expectations about your kids is just... well remember that they are their own people. All you can do is love them and try to do the right thing, but that doesn't mean they'll turn out like you want them to. You shouldn't expect them to either, you should hope for their happiness, but even that is not a guarantee.
Having a kid means you need to be ready to love someone unconditionally and possibly not get anything back from it, at all. I think if you have that mindset, then you're ready to be a parent.

The bit about the parents who "don't know what they're doing and screw up a lot" just sounds so alarming to me. PLEASE don't think it's a good idea to have a child if you think that you're going to be absolutely clueless as to what to do with them. You'll more likely than not mess them up.
