I strongly doubt Pratchett thought there actually was some genetic predisposition for girls to like pink.

Except that's the inherent implication in that statement, even if it's intended to be funny. That the 'magnetic attraction' is some inexplicable force of nature that can't be affected or controlled.

Not really, given the statement's made in the context of a world that runs on belief and narrative causality. Stereotypes and fictional tropes are uncontrollable forces of nature there, because that's one of the underlying principles of how that world works.

Like. Yes, you've correctly identified the logic of the joke. But it doesn't need to be disproven. It's a joke, and the premise is only being entertained for the sake of the joke.

Now, I want to be clear here: I'm not saying that what he said was justified because it was a joke. But I think it has to either criticized or defended as a joke. And that means that it doesn't need to be criticized or defended as a serious statement.

DA

I think you're possible overestimating people's ability to take it as a joke though.

It's a statement you hear in ordinary conversation that's taken, without any malice whatsoever, as being a factual thing. For everyone who looks at the statement and gets the joke, there'll be many others for whom it merely reinforces a completely false assumption they're already making, i.e. they don't get the joke. In that ambigiousness, then it's hard to look at it as solely a joke, because it -- and other statements like it that people pass off as jokes -- has much wider connotations than that.
