Question about War Machine - possible Age of Ultron spoilers in thread

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I just got back from Age of Ultron and I'm a little disappointed by Rhodey/War Machine. Full disclosure, I've watched the first Iron Man, but not the other two, so it may be actor dissonance. The role just felt lackluster to me, which is weird because I like Don Cheadle and I think he's a good actor. Of course, the whole movie felt sort of disjointed to me, like they were trying to fit to much into it - setting up future stories, delving into characters' backstories, introducing new characters, etc. Did anyone else have this issue?

War Machine was basically a glorified cameo in Age of Ultron, if you want more of him you need to watch the other Iron Man films.

But I understand your feeling in general, there were a lot of cameos in the film and a lot of setup for the future, and it's just going to get more disjointed as we add more characters.

Like I love seeing these characters on screen but it is really hard to give proper respect to them in a movie timeline, even with the amount of movies we're getting that's still not even close to how much you get with them in comics.

The more I hear about this movie the more it sounds exactly like the first: loud and with too many characters for me to care about any of them.

ayrt

Yes, it was loud, and there were a bunch of characters - Pepper, Jane, and Loki weren't in it, but just about everybody else was, plus some new ones. There were some nice character interactions, though - I really liked how Thor and Cap worked together.

Age Of Ultron was the first movie in ten years that I literally fell asleep trying to watch.

That shit was boring as fuck.

I feel asleep during parts of it and only laughed when everyone tried to lift up Thor's hammer. It felt too busy to me for me to really care what was happening and the characters felt like joke vechiles and info dumps than actual people. Didn't see the chemistry with the romantic subplot either.

No I had the disjointed feeling as well, It just didn't feel like it fit into the MCU atm and I have no idea how the others movies are supposed to go from it. Like apparently it was supposed to be setting up to Civil War and, no? Steve and Tony leave on a good note, how is that setting up the conflict for it?

I actually quite like Rhodey's part in AoU but there was just so much going on, maybe too much.

It's setting up the conflict by putting people with superpowers that are more than one-off fluke science experiments like the Hulk and Cap on the public radar, as something that can't just be disappeared any more. I'm guessing the conflict is supposed to build over the next several films, and Civil War will be the point that sees Steve and Tony on opposite sides of the divide.
