I don't think it is. I have not read any proper scientific sources, so I'm not going to vouch for this, but my anecdata suggests that abuse makes the child more likely to become abusive themselves. There is nothing mysterious of inexplicable about this, really. When you've lived in such an environment for years, it's easy to pick up some behavioural patterns, especially if they're efficient ones (i.e. they allow you to get what you want).

I'm an aro-ace childfree and I'm still fucking terrified this will happen to me. It already happened to my mother and to my grandmother, and it's one of my worst nightmares.

This. My dad beat the crap out of me, his dad beat the crap out of him, and his dad wasn't all that great either from what I've heard. I'm pretty sure my dad didn't think "I want to be just like my dad when I grow up" but that's what happened anyway. It's easy to think that people are more likely to avoid their parents mistakes because of the pain they've suffered as a result of them, but I think some people also underestimate just how much growing up in a toxic and violent environment can fuck your head up. It's not an excuse, but, yeah, there's definitely a correlation between having abusive parents and becoming an abusive parent (disclaimer: of course not all abused children grow up to be abusive. I have friends who grew up in terrible environments and are the most loving parents I've ever seen, but they also had a LOT of help in dealing with their childhood, as have I. Some people don't get that)
