(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)Maybe people don't like that everyone has a love interest, but complaining only about the female character having one seems disingenuous to me. So all the boys should have a significant other but the only female character must be single even though she always had love interests in the comics?
I wish ppl would just get that a romantic relationship isn't less important for the character development than any other kind of storyline. If you get to see her in a way you didn't before and express her feelings for someone who is more than a friend to her, that is not 'useless' it's in fact a different excuse to know more stuff about the character beyond her action scenes.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)One of the big reasons I liked the idea of Clint x Natasha, for instance, was that Clint WASN'T a more prominent character than Natasha. In fact, SHE had had more screen time so far than him (Iron Man 2, Avengers, Cap 2 compared to his Thor and Avengers) and thus a relationship between them could be more balanced.
With Bruce, though, the guy already had his own movie (whereas Natasha hasn't...). And, as we see in Avengers Age of Ultron, their relationship primarily centers around Bruce/the Hulk rather than Natasha. They COULD, for instance, have made their relationship center around Bruce trying to help her come to terms with blowing all her covers or having the public lose faith in her after finding out about her past. But no...instead we have to make it about the Hulk and Bruce's issues. Even the revelations of Natasha's backstory (her sterilization) are framed in that context -- where she brings it up to reassure HIM.
And I never said all the boys should have a love interest either. In fact, I'd quite like the opposite. I don't mind if a few people have significant others but I really don't see the need for EVERYONE to have one. Hollywood makes it MUCH too big of a deal that you need a partner to be complete and I find it rather annoying. I'm hoping Steve stays single for that reason, but I'm not holding my breath.
It's not that a romantic relationship is LESS important. It's that, for female characters, because they're often not the more prominent character in the pairing, they often end up supporting a male character's story rather than developing their own when they get thrust into a relationship. Hence why I would have preferred a Clint x Natasha relationship (since I think they're both on more equal footing as they lack individual movies) or a relationship with Bruce that focused on NATASHA's issues rather than his (his being the Hulk, largely).
