I think "Verzweiflungslachen" - "despair laugh" fits the bill? I don't think it's an official word though.

This is awesome. :D

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really, no. However, there's the expression "nicht wissen, ob man lachen oder weinen soll" which I think would fit the bill here. Sorry that there isn't a single word ;).

Disagreed, that line sorta implies that you're doing neither.

Ahahahahahaha

Let me laugh/sob with you, OP. :\

In my AU headcanon, Barney and Robin got married and did this again for their 25th anniversary, with a much longer Murtaugh List.

They get back together in the alternate ending, and that's the only one which makes any kind of sense or matters, honestly.

There's an alternate ending?

Yes, it was included in the DVD. You can view it on Youtube here

Spoilers: mother lives, Barney and Robin are shown looking happy at each other (showrunners confirmed they got back together in this ending) and there's a lot of flashbacks on how he got there + yellow umbrella imagery. Different theme song as well.

Back in the day, HIMYM was in constant threat of being canceled. So they wrote and filmed parts for the ending in advance in case they ever had a last season. So the ending was all written in 2006 long before a lot of character development ever even happened. In fact, the mother was supposed to be Victoria. The thing that gets me is he didn't even edit it. Like, there's very basic continuity errors all in the finale which make either several of the earlier seasons wrong, or the finale wrong. (For example, in 46 minutes Ted says "Robin traveled the world, but was never alone." And Lilly and Robin are shown being friends when they would've been distant in Bad Crazy.)

According to the Showrunners, there were two endings filmed and they chose one because it was harder hitting. However, the showrunners are actually pretty notorious liars. Just before the ending someone asked what would happen to Barney and Robin and they said "They've been through so much, you can rest easy."

Some people theorize the Alt ending was edited together as an asspull move to try and help out DVD sales.

Wait...what? Alternate ending? Like a real one that isn't just in everyone's heads?

Yes, it was included in the DVD. You can view it on Youtube here.

The showrunners confirmed on twitter that Barney and Robin get back together in that one and the mother lives. Also, no Ted/Robin! Not even at all.

Original Secret Text: What REALLY convinced me of this couple's awesomeness?

The fact that I don't see how Future!Ted could've narrated this episode as lovingy as he did if they aren't this happy together in 2030.

s!b this is the stupidest reasoning anyone has ever used in the history of fandom.

Current Secret Text: I made this secret back in 2011.

Ha. Hahaha. Yup. *sobs*
