Because you're just not recognizing how terribly brave it is to live that way and not be sobbing at all times. Or something. They're the ones doing it right in their mind, so of course you're being heartless to them.

What if the people in those glurgy pieces don't consider it brave at all? What if they just see it as everyday life and go about their way? Paralympians come to mind here.

OP here - I think that was meant to be sarcasm, actually. But you're absolutely right, and that's why it drives me nuts.

Now that you mention it, I can see how that's meant to be sarcastic. It's a little more subtle than other sarcastic bits I've seen online, so it went right over my head. *facepalm*

But yeah, I've read in a few places that it's a really strange situation for Paralympians because of the expectations many people have of the disabled. I was in special ed growing up and surrounded by disabled classmates. I get they need various forms of assistance at different times in their lives, but I also remember not really seeing the wheelchairs or other aids. The nonverbal kids were the biggest mystery to me as a kid, but I know now that they're dealing with circumstances I can barely begin to imagine. On the other hand, Paralympians want something that's pretty universal: recognition of athletic achievement. That's it. No add-ons about achievement in light of their disabilities or anything like that. I think on an individual level people can at least be made aware of that. On a macro level, however, most groups are not there yet and defensive if someone who's not disabled puts forth the notion of treating the disabled with more normalcy than anticipated.

I hate inspiration porn for just that reason.
