I actually read this one author once . . . I can never remember his name. But he wrote this story where a family that can't afford the cost of birth control, having already had a ton of children, starts having sex with the kids who're too young to get pregnant. At the time, I thought it was hilarious satire. It wasn't until later that I found out that the author was a convicted child molester.

Was it Marion Zimmer Bradley's husband, Walter Breen? He's the first one that comes to mind.

And yeah, that's... actually not an uncommon defense of child rape, the claim that doing so is altruistic and for the good of the family. Even "experts" have argued that. It's. Yeah. It's too believable for me to see it as satire.

Different person, but I'd read extensively the depositions from the case that were posted online (when the news about MZB herself being a child molester came out last summer). While I remember that Breen wrote nonfiction for NAMBLA, I don't recall anything about him having written fiction, and given that his various nonfiction work came up in the depositions, I would think anything fictional like the above would have been mentioned as well.

The sad thing really is that Breen is far from the only one. :-\

Ahhh, seems Walter Breen was associated with sci-fi fandom, and wrote for fanzines, but may not have been published for sci-fi otherwise. My mistake.

Yeeeeah, Breen is far from the only one, which is really sad. And reading about how many times dude got charged before FINALLY getting arrested, only to pretty much kick it immediately, is pretty disheartening.

As far as I know, Breen only was published in nonfiction and fanzines (which were basically fanfic). I am curious as to the author of the story mentioned, if only to make sure I don't ever accidentally pick up his work.

Yeah, and if you read the "Breendoggle" accounts, it is explicitly stated that many people in SFF fandom knew that Breen behaved inappropriately with children, and the community leaders basically told parents that they wouldn't kick him out of the group, and that the parents should be responsible for keeping their kids safe. There is a lot of evidence to show that people were aware of his predilections, and in the depositions, MZB confirms that she knew about more than one victim, and that others did as well, but no charges were ever filed, and he was never banned from conventions or the like AFAIK. It's pretty damn fucked up.

Enh, that doesn't really surprise me. Most people who rape children get excused and covered up for for years, even as the evidence mounts up. It's pretty fascinating to watch and learn about, if horrible and tragic.
