I am highly not in favor of that.

f!s has been inching towards anon commenting for awhile now.

Compared to a couple of years back, the climate's too harsh for most people to feel comfortable commenting with an account. We might as well put us all on equal footing.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Were you not here in the LJ days? Because holy shit.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
but anyone who's worried about not being on an equal footing can already choose to go anon

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
But anon don't you see? When you're anon, you can be harassed and stalked and nothing can be done about it! I mean I know that doesn't make sense because, well, you're anon, so it's not like people can ACTUALLY follow you around, but it's seriously a big problem.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Not every anon has the opportunity to create an account. There are many reasons not to. As long as there is a preferential system, then that discriminates against people who have to comment anon or not comment at all. On the other hand, nothing prevents named users from just going anon other than loss of privilege and status. It would be fairer just to do away with named commenting and keep everyone as an anon and have their comments stand by themselves without privilege or clique.

Are you...are you telling us to check our named!user privilege?!?

ikr

Holy shit, you've gone Full Tumblr. never go Full Tumblr, anon.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it's truly a privilege argument, but it's true that named users get away with making comments that anons wouldn't. If not affording privilege, it certainly doesn't make for a very level playing field.

Comments and opinions should stand on their own merit, not on who says them.

I think that's more about the humanizing effect of a name and a face? It's the same reason when I took online classes in college, I always uploaded an endearing personal pic for my icon, to give me a face and make it harder for professors to crush my dreams guiltlessly.

Personal details and backstory add up, and people feel like they know you. Like how they show a soldier looking at a photo of his girlfriend back home right before he gets exploded--it shows that he is a human and someone loves him, and they were going to get married, weep damnit.

I don't think it amounts to privilege though, cuz you give up plenty in return for it. Your past actions and statements can always be used against you, and if you get in a flaming fight with someone over who Ash Ketchum's dad was, you can't just stroll into the next post and be like "omg! I love Italian food too! This recipe is great, thanks!" cuz they'll be like "Fuck you, Blitzwing. Ash's dad is clearly Giovanni, and I don't want an idiot who thinks otherwise using my grandmother's pasta recipe. Puttana."

You are a great example of the latter point.

Well, it's true that I won't swap recipes with someone who refuses to see the obvious. Professor Oak is Ash's dad.

Being a dick has conseqences and makes people not want to deal with you, who'd have thought!

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
IT'S SHOCKINNNNNNGGG

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
But, like, even if you forced the named users to go anon, there are ways of getting around the "anon" portion. Unless you're suggesting case both ban named users + delete signed comments.

Although I also just realized someone else who's not me could sign their posts with my name. Holy fuck, that'd be confusing/wanky.

Basically the problem of tripcode users on 4chan.

Except without the ability for a secure trip.
