It really depends on your approach. I was having a conversation about arcade games with the employee of a video game/comic book store as I was picking up my comics last week, and when neither of us knew the specifics of some light gun game she'd mentioned, someone interrupted us with a lot of unnecessary detail as we were about to change the subject. He seemed like he was trying really hard to join the discussion. It was kind of painful. Afterward he went back to shouting at the arcade cabinet he was playing.

B-but I'm sure you're nothing like that.

Ahh, I hope I'm not considered that obnoxious! I at least have them on the shouting at inanimate objects thing, since I can't make myself talk unless there's a sentient being or adorable fluffy animal nearby.

I try to keep it under ten words. If someone seems unsure about something, I might say "I like that one" or "I don't like that one." Or if someone asks for a summary of something, say, Air Gear (That's the most frequent because it's always shrinkwrapped.), I say "Skating street gangs, basically."

I really do hope that I don't freak people out with it. I probably do.

I think it just depends on the person.

One of my friends loves chatting with the manga fans. She likes making reccomendations and finding out what they want to read. I don't mind it, but if it involves discussion on how horrible my taste in books is... I'd rather not hear it. (And that's usually the bulk of the conversation. But that's what happens when you read Transformer comics. I accept it.) My other friend who doesn't work at a book store, hates being spoken to when she's shopping anywhere. So... Like I said, I guess it just depends.

Overall - the way you sound, it seems like you're just being nice. I'd appreciate it and I'm quite sure others do too.

I try to not point out how much peoples' tastes suck because I don't want to be found dead in a ditch the next day with Naruto headbands stuffed in every orifice. "I'm not familiar with that one" is great for that, even though it's occasionally dishonest.

I totally understand why people wouldn't want to be talked to in a bookstore, or any store for that matter. Kind of makes you feel like you're being watched, which is... Nothing short of disturbing, really.

With any luck. I'll probably think twice before saying anything to people in bookstores now, though.

Fair enough! It took some people giving me some nasty crit on my taste to get me to stop doing it to others quite so much.

Eh - Like I said, it depends on the person. When I'm totally excited about something (... lets say, Transformers!) and I'm bouncing about in that geeky sort of way over it, I'm more than happy to have ANYONE talk to me about it because nobody I know IRL has that interest.

But again, it depends. Some people meet boyfriends or girlfriends at the grocery store... and some people try to flee those places as quickly as possible while avoiding eye contact.

Oh lord I know how that second part is. I went so far as to specifically seek out universities based on specialized subjects just so that I know a lot of people would have the same classes as me and, with any luck, we could nerd over the interesting aspects of them.

Oh man, that's really nothing like my example. You were offering a bit of information that they seemed genuinely interested in, not breaking into their conversation to expound your IMPRESSIVE KNOWLEDGE of whatever topic. I wouldn't mind someone giving me a short summary of a shrinkwrapped manga if I was obviously curious.
