I've...heard it pronounced that way in other media, before the films...

Yeah the Fox cartoon did too

But now I'm wondering, cause there's an St. Xavier's school near where I live, and I've heard it pronounced the same as Prof X... I wonder if it's just in general an Anglophone thing, or if it comes from X-men. I'm thinking the former.
