Image: Professor X from the X-Men movies, sitting in an office with flowery curtains.

Text: I am irrationally annoyed by how Marvel "Americanized" Professor X's name.
Saying "Ex-ay-vee-er" is way more clunky than the French "Zah-vee-ay". It's like you have to pause midway through saying his name.
I have no idea why they would do this, except to highlight the fact that he has an X in his name. "Professor X" does that job just as well.
At least give him a pronounceable name!

Love your mention of the flowery curtains.

I've...heard it pronounced that way in other media, before the films...

Yeah the Fox cartoon did too

But now I'm wondering, cause there's an St. Xavier's school near where I live, and I've heard it pronounced the same as Prof X... I wonder if it's just in general an Anglophone thing, or if it comes from X-men. I'm thinking the former.

Wait, hasn't this character's name... always been pronounced like that? Because "X"?

It has as far as I know. I remember watching the cartoon as a kid.

What the hell, I pronounced his name as "Ksahv'er" my entire life :D I can never get accustomed to the fact that "x" is pronounced as "z" for some reason. But the Americanized version sounds even more bizarre, I agree.

/an ESL who isn't very well familiar with the franchise here.

They chose his name specifically so that it would start with an "ex" sound. If they didn't want to pronounce it like that he'd be named something other than "Xavier"

I didn't know that wasn't how you pronounced his name. Didn't really think about it to be honest.

I happen to like the way it sounds though...

Why do you think it's supposed to be pronounced as a French word?

Xavier is a pretty common name in English. Pronouncing the X as 'ex' instead of 's' or 'z' is still weird, but the 'er' part is definitely how it's pronounced in English. Near-homophony with 'Saviour' would have been a nice bit of symbolism, that it's sad they missed, but...oh well.

...Why would he pronounce it the French way and not the English way, when he's not French?

You seem to think the show made up that pronunciation, but no, that's how Xavier is pronounced in English.

I'm also confused why you think the French pronunciation is more legitimate than the English or Spanish one?

I always thought the anglo way of pronouncing Xavier was "Zay-vier"... with no attempt to make an x or -ks- sound.

Personally I prefer the Spanish form "Javier" ;-)

I didn't even realise the French "Zavee-ay" pronunciation was a thing, but it suddenly seems so obvious and beautiful. Man how the fuck did we turn that into "Gzzayvee-errrr", I'm ashamed
But yeah Professor X was blatantly created with the latter pronunciation in mind.

Pretty sure this is just the Anglo-pronunciation of the name on the whole, most of the time.

He's not French.

what a fucking dumb secret.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2015-05-03 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This is probably a troll, considering Xavier has always being pronounced the way it's pronounced in the movies.

That's how his name is always pronounced, he's not French, it's a obviously pun for "X" and anyway, the Spanish pronunciation is better than the French one.

All the xaviers I know are pronounced zav-ier so I figured he was just pronounced with the ex to highlight the "ex" in his name. (Or that is just how ppl over there pronounced xavier)
