Text: I am irrationally annoyed by how Marvel "Americanized" Professor X's name.
Saying "Ex-ay-vee-er" is way more clunky than the French "Zah-vee-ay". It's like you have to pause midway through saying his name.
I have no idea why they would do this, except to highlight the fact that he has an X in his name. "Professor X" does that job just as well.
At least give him a pronounceable name!

But now I'm wondering, cause there's an St. Xavier's school near where I live, and I've heard it pronounced the same as Prof X... I wonder if it's just in general an Anglophone thing, or if it comes from X-men. I'm thinking the former.

I happen to like the way it sounds though...

Xavier is a pretty common name in English. Pronouncing the X as 'ex' instead of 's' or 'z' is still weird, but the 'er' part is definitely how it's pronounced in English. Near-homophony with 'Saviour' would have been a nice bit of symbolism, that it's sad they missed, but...oh well.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)You seem to think the show made up that pronunciation, but no, that's how Xavier is pronounced in English.
I'm also confused why you think the French pronunciation is more legitimate than the English or Spanish one?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)But yeah Professor X was blatantly created with the latter pronunciation in mind.
