...Why would he pronounce it the French way and not the English way, when he's not French?

You seem to think the show made up that pronunciation, but no, that's how Xavier is pronounced in English.

I'm also confused why you think the French pronunciation is more legitimate than the English or Spanish one?

As I said above, my first exposure to the name Xavier was when I was in my early teens, so the French pronunciation stuck with me. Whenever I read it in the comics, I assumed he was of French descent. It was just personal preference that I guess morphed into a headcanon of sorts.

But the British English way is to pronounce it "Zavier" like the French do. And he's supposed to be British English.

"Ex-avier" is the American/Canadian English pronunciation. It's always annoyed me. It's just plain wrong for his character.
