I find that, in some fandoms, people tend to be less vocal about their appreciation for smut out of embarrassment or some other reason. A smaller than typical number of comments or kudos or whatever doesn't necessarily mean readers think the smut's poorly written.

That said, write what you want and are comfortable with! You're filling a need through gen fic as well, and a need that's met less often so it's even more important to have gen writers contribute.

I guess every fandom is different, but my fandom is smut-mad and most gen fic - even the really good stuff - is greeted by crickets.

I totally get the temptation to write what the vocal majority [says it] wants, but I hope the OP doesn't go that way.

This has been my experience in all my fandoms too. Maybe the fandom the ayrt has in mind is, like, something kid-oriented or old-fashioned or something?
