(Anonymous) 2015-05-04 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)I've seen too many people drop great fics because they feel they have to lever in some smut or shipping and they just don't like writing that. I hate that there is this meme that fanfic is all about the smut and the shipping and always has been. It just is not true. The gen was always more important, but the smut always got more talked about.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 01:56 am (UTC)(link)It just feels ridiculous to me to be butthurt at gen fans for being annoyed at having to scour and scrounge for gen, when we het/slash fans generally have so much het/slash fic to gorge ourselves on that we couldn't even begin to finish it all.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 02:22 am (UTC)(link)Except they didn't say they were annoyed and frustrated at having to scour for gen. They were self-important and judgemental over the stuff that doesn't fit their special little criteria, and that's why they were obnoxious.

And also, I think writing a great and satisfying genfic is a whole lot more impressive than writing a good and satisfying shippy fic. It (usually) takes much more ambition and originality and creativity to craft something compelling and fulfilling without the crutch of shipping (not that shipping is inherently bad, obviously, but, just like in Hollywood, it is very often used lazily to the point where it becomes a feat to create a story without it.)
