I think they're really shitty people.

I don't think they should be murdered, and I'm willing to defend that position. And I think that's a stronger, more significant moral line than the one about not being a xenophobic asshole.

I think instead of defending their right to say offensive things. We should instead invest our time and energy defending their much less invoked right to shut the fuck up and not be morons. I'll defend their right to not be assholes any day of the week. They need to start exercizing it more tho.

Speaking just for myself here, I consider all of those rights to be important rights. But only one of those rights is under threat at the moment - and even if it's not a serious threat, it's one that I think has to be rejected out of hand. Instead of tacitly justifying the violence against them which is the only way that I can make sense of this entire line of reasoning.

Yeah, the right to not be deliberately offensive is under real threat and a lot of people don't even know it exists. Radical action needs to be taken to get people to use it more.

But they didn't actually get murdered. Their attackers died instead. (They were apparently both shot by the same cop, and I hope he gets praised for this--from the sounds of it, he did his job well.)

I'm sorry if I misinterpreted you, but that was my reading of the bit about it being a "pass the popcorn" situation. That them fighting (and possibly killing each other) is a good thing, and that it would have been acceptable if the organizers had died instead of the gunmen.

This. You can also believe that someone should be allowed to practice Islam under the law, but still find it to be a really shitty horrible religion on its own.
