It's not like there was GIANT TEXT at the beginning of the movie that said: "BASED ON A MUSICAL BY STEPHEN SONDHEIM."

Also, despite the fact that some of his musicals are weird, and his composition is unique, he's also, uh, a pretty well known musical composer and lyricist. Like, probably one of the only ones your average person would be able to name even if they weren't certain what he'd done. POSSIBLY THIS HAS TO DUE WITH HIS INVOLVEMENT IN ARGUABLY THE MOST FAMOUS MUSICAL OF ALL TIME. *eyeroll*
