tl;dr

So...?

Wait are you dissing Sondheim?

But in all seriousness, Sondheim may not be the greatest composer/lyricist ever, or maybe he his—but that's something left up to taste and personal preference.

If you know anything about music or musical theatre then you know that Sondheim has done some amazing and revolutionary things for the genre. It's fine if you don't personally like Sondheim's body of work, but to belittle him only shows your ignorance, the man is legendary and talented, and his shows are classics.

I personally can't stand almost all of Rodgers & Hammerstein's catalogue as I think their shows are inhearently flawed (which is the same thing I think about every CLAMP series btw) but I can still recognise their artistic genius even if they don't suit my tastes (same thing goes for CLAMP).

And it having a fandom makes way more sense to people outside of the intrawebs than whatever animu or flavour of the year TV show you're into. People from school would think it way more normal if I was a freak for some composer than my "Japanese cartoons".

so people are allowed to dislike him but only if they conform to a certain set of rigid definitions and rules to express their dislike?

It's fine to dislike him, but for anyone to act like he's a talentless hack makes them an ignorant asshat.

dislike=/=disrespect

I respect that not everyone likes the things I like, but maybe I'm crazy for thinking that people should have any sort of common courtesy on the interwebz. I suppose expecting open minded civility must be too rigid then?
