(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)Let's say you're right and take a little test. It's 1 am and you're walking home along a quiet country road with few cars passing by. It's been a long day at work, but you're happy because you just got paid and are carrying $200 in your pocket. Now all you want to do is get home, but it's a long walk and you're very tired. A small but painful blister is forming on your left heel and... it's starting to rain.
You suddenly become aware of a vehicle coming up slowly behind you, so you move a little onto the shoulder to make sure they have plenty of room to pass. It's a mid-size passenger van with tinted windows and curiously enough, the back doors are fastened with a bicycle chain and a very sturdy lock. But what's this? The van is slowing down even more so that it idles alongside you and the window rolls down. Inside is a cadaverously pale man with greasy hair who smells like he hasn't bathed in a week, wearing a filthy t-shirt and jeans. Tattooed on his bicep is a band of swastikas. Suspiciously twitchy, he looks you up and down like a piece of meat and leers at you through the window. He inhales deeply, as if he can smell you from where you stand.
"You want a ride home?"
What's your answer? Are you going to do the polite, open minded thing and accept his gracious offer? Or will you perhaps use what you observe of this man, his vehicle and his possible motives and make a judgement call that says no, you won't be getting into his scary ass van tonight if you can help it so you're going to run like hell?
Think carefully and remember that according to you, circumstances don't excuse behavior.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-06 04:32 am (UTC)(link)I'm taking their argument to its logical (albeit ridiculous) conclusion.
If circumstances are not relevant factors in judging behavior, then either it is always right to kill people, or it is always wrong to kill people.
If it is always wrong to kill people, then it is wrong to fight the Nazis in WW2.
