I'm sorry, but conservative ideology runs the U.S. no matter what state you live in. I'm not just talking about gay marriage, I'm talking about the fundemantal conservative slant of the U.S. and corporations who control it.

36 out of 50 states allow gay people to get married! That's a numerical majority, the only kind of majority that matters! Don't you feel included yet?

I'm a bi female working for the federal government. I'm pretty much the lowest of the low according to Congress (they hate federal employees too). The only thing I have going for me is my whiteness.

And we have a black president. RACISM IS OVER AND BLACK PEOPLE DON'T GET KILLED OH WAIT

(Anonymous) 2015-05-06 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
according to a recent poll Americans are actually more uncomfortable with an evangelical Christian being president than they are with a gay or lesbian person being president

I don't even have any partisan spin on that statistic, I just find it completely fascinating

their are a number of ...cults that can be called evangelical Christian and have as a core value denial of realty. i think you can see why this can be scary.

Imagine you were in a group with nine other starving people and 6 of you received food but the other 4 were still starving, and you weren't allowed to share so that everyone could have an equal, albeit smaller portion. Are you all fed and happy now? Or does the fact that the majority of you are now fed count as an overall improvement but doesn't change the fact that there is a minority among you who are starving and have no food? Would you be content with the fact that society, after decades of struggle, is now open to feeding most of you, but not all of you?

+1

Erm. Hrm. Ehhhhh.

I mean, I mostly agree with that. But I feel like gay marriage is an issue where the interests of the wealthy aren't actually that involved. Like, gay people getting married doesn't cost corporations shit. And I think that can be seen in the increasing number of places where gay marriage is legal, and in the generally increasing support for gay marriage and for gay rights generally in polls and opinion surveys.

Like, it's true what you say in general - and I hope that I didn't offend you with my post and I apologize if I did - but I think this is an issue where it's not actually that relevant.

Yup. Very true. Even supposedly very liberal Americans still react viscerally when they hear the word socialist. Liberal means something very different in the US and what it means is fairly conservative.

TBH I agree with this.

You even see it in so-called progressives who talk a big game about equal rights for one group but are paternal and condescending to another group, or use a hot topic moment (such as the current debate about black people and their status in US society) to hijack the conversation for their own pet cause (bonus douchebag points if said pet cause is veganism or some other mostly-white lifestyle movement.) Intersectionality? What's that?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-07 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
After reading that, I want to find a vegan to punch.

Even an inkling as to the topic of that link makes me mad.
