Sometimes I wonder how people would have liked the original trilogy without the BDSM angle - if it would have just been obscure. I feel the same about Lynn Flewelling, her fantasy is amazingly generic if you took out the sexuality and gender issues.

But I still love the alternate world fantasy and the first 300 pages of Dart are still some of the favs I've ever read. I do think this is clouded by having read it at 16, however. Being an adult when Imri's books came out they fell flat.

I think the Kushiel books can stand up as decent fantasy without the sex parts and Phedre given some other magical trait to make her special, but 50 Shades would be truly shitty romance without the sex.
