Worse: each character is pushing the other away because they think telling the truth will hurt them. Each person is hurting himself or herself over it, but each thinks the other will be happier this way, and is willing to sacrifice their own happiness for that. I once read a Fire Emblem fic where four different people were doing that to each other, and it felt like the emotional equivalent of Saw.
