Wow. I'm kind of the opposite. I LOVE shippy fic that has a well-written plot not centered around the couple. Mainly because I think that such a plot gives the writer the chance to really dig into the pairing and see how they'd react when confronted with a conflict. That and I like supportive relationships so having the relationship BE the conflict gets a little tiring for me.

Whatever floats your boat, though.

(I don't mean this condescendingly or anything -- I guess I'm just surprised that our views are so divergent!)

But there's a difference between shippy fic where the relationship isn't the plot, so to speak, and fic that isn't at all shippy, is entirely plot-based, and just acts like X non-canon pairing is canon-without even exploring or showing the dynamic, just throwing in "oh and A kissed B." A minor distinction, and I'm sure there's a lot of fuzzy grey area, but I agree with the poster above--it can be really annoying, and read not as "digging into" a pairing but as advertising a pet ship.
