Well here's the thing -- the main character IS delighted to be there, which is what feotakahari and a lot of other people somehow completely miss, despite the fact that she waxes on for pages and pages and pages about how much she craves pain and despite how eager she is to start fucking all the sadists.

Now there are some characters who don't get so much pleasure out of pain, and there are some douchebags and some bad things that happen, because, you know -- fiction, so conflict. So it might still not be up your alley. But, seriously, nothing annoys me more than people acting as if Phedre isn't a masochist when she's literally constantly telling the reader that she is and that the kind of sex she's having is awesome.

And if she gets her jollies from that, more power to her. (Or more power would be to her if she weren't fictional, I guess.) But I read Pervocracy, and when the author talks about BDSM, she talks about receiving pain and receiving comfort. About being with someone who wants to hurt her, but no more than she wants to be hurt. To me, that feels like something I'd rather read about than two people who don't really care about each other and are just using each other.

Enh, I'm reading up on these books and am a little confused by a couple things. I'm finding that apparently the sexual training starts at ten? And they start taking clients in their teens? If that's true, that really squicks me.

Also, it says she's like this super-special anguisette thingy? And I'm kinda confused as to how that differs from your average masochist, and why they're apparently so rare?

Supernatural healing ability and an inability to experience pain as anything other than pleasurable, regardless of whether it's in a consensual sexual framework, or outright literal nearly-lethal torture.

Also some nebulously defined angel magic that's basically an excuse for the author to whip out a deus ex machina whenever she's written herself into a corner.

Huh! That's interesting. Though also sounds INCREDIBLY dangerous, especially for a young child. Does she feel normal pleasurable things as not pleasant?

She can, and does, enjoy non BDSM sex, but she tends to need the BDSM as an outlet every now and then.

Also, a courtesan can't be hired until they are 16, IIRC (there definitely is an age, I'm pretty sure it's 16). Which is still a minor, true, but not exactly what I would term a "young child."

Enh, that still makes me uncomfortable. I'm weird about age stuff.

Otherwise, that sounds pretty cool, just not quite for me.
