Paying? London is the first one that comes to mind ("IT'S 50 P TO PEE!" D: thank you local people for staring at me like I am the weird one), but some places in Italy have actual people hanging out collecting money rather than turnstiles. I can't remember where else in Europe but it was most of the trip.

I was disappointed that they weren't like the toilets of the future or even clean. Just regular public toilets, that I have to pay to use.

...I did not know this.

What in the ever-loving world? I am beside myself.

Ew, wow. I think in the US, they tried to institute pay toilets, but they didn't last long. I can only presume angry broke people showed their opinions by pissing outside the stalls.

Does sound kinda like a really gross method to try and run out the local homeless.

I know. I'm so confused. How did this pass through government? Were people not (err pardon the pun) pissed off enough to protest it?

Yeah. It doesn't sit right with me that people might not have access to something as basic as a toilet. Especially when they can use other means (back of toilet door advertising, maybe) to cover cleaning costs.

Enh, maybe folks didn't know about it?

And yeah, hygiene is a big problem with homeless folks. There's a reason a lot of homeless tricks recommend getting a gym membership, if you can; it allows you to bathe and go to the bathroom safely.

It didn't go through government at least not in Norway. Slowly but surely every public toilet ends up being a pay-toilet, which is very annoying, but they are for the most part in train stations and such and most people can wait until they get on the train or bus.

And we don't actually have a huge homeless* problem, so it wouldn't have been a factor either way.

*I only count people who are homeless and have a Norwegian citizenship.

I've travelled in 10 American states, and in the majority of stores, they would not let you pee, but in some they'd do only if you bought something first.

Well, yeah, but I don't consider those public toilets. Public toilets to me are shit at public space: parks, subways, libraries. Also, it does depend on the shop.

Eh? When I lived in Rome, I never had to pay to pee??

True. I think I used restaurant toilets in Rome mostly, so I don't remember paying there, but I definitely payed when I was on the Amalfi coast and I am struggling to remember where else. I made it a habit after that to just pee whenever I found a free toilet. I peed on a moving bus. It's not an experience I want to repeat, but I felt brave and weirdly patriotic.
